Are you excited about the Internet marketing industry and the innovative work the Charlotte marketing community will deliver in 2011? More importantly, do you feel a renewed sense of urgency among local businesses, agencies and media to participate, create and challenge the status quo? Maybe next year? Why not this year!

As incoming president of the Charlotte IMA, here are my resolutions and challenges for local brands and marketers:

1. Participate. Get involved with the interactive marketing community.

2. Create. Create content whether it be for blogs, social media, or a website. Steps that will help you develop your content strategy:

  • 3 Year Plans. Stop thinking short-term. Make a 3-year plan to really develop your content strategy and make it effective.
  • Roadmaps. Set activities and milestones and hold yourself accountable to them.
  • Intregrate. This is the year to build integrations. If your leads are not going into CRM - why not? If you can't get a single view of your customer across email and social - why not?
  • ROI Models. Can you identify what marketing channel drives your biggest returns? If not, you need to develop a model that clearly identifies which tactics are working, so you can invest more in those, and which are not working, so you can get rid of them.

3. Challenge the Status Quo. Get out of your comfort zone.

  • Stop putting off mobile and social.
  • Refine your marketing mix. Start over. It's time to make online a bigger share of the budget.
  • Cut what isn't working and invest in what is.
  • Get management involved.
  • Get in over your head.
